Hello, My Name Is Distance
My new book, Hello, My Name Is Distance: Mapping the Geography of South Florida and Queer Longing, is now available.
Growing up gay in South Florida at the turn of the millennium meant learning to live with distance. School was thirty miles from home. Friends, punk shows, and boys met in AOL chat rooms were often hours away. Before he could drive, Matt rode the train through an endless suburban sprawl. Once he got his license, he drove constantly, trying to bridge the distance between two separate lives.
Told through interconnected episodes, Hello, My Name Is Distance moves between a childhood shaped by the rules of masculinity and an adolescence spent trying to escape them. First loves, unlikely friendships, reckless encounters, and art become part of a search for connection and place to belong.
Darkly comic and intimate, Hello, My Name Is Distance is a queer coming-of-age memoir about a young artist learning to make something from the distance and longing that shaped him.
